Baruch Alumna Chosen for Port Authority Leadership Fellows Program
July 20, 2023
Baruch College alumna Shahnoza Kurbonshoeva (MPA ’22) recently began the Port Authority Leadership Fellows Program where she is obtaining invaluable job experience for senior management roles and public service in the New York/New Jersey Metropolitan region.
Leadership Fellows take part in a two-year, rotational program that focus on critical business functions, such as planning, finance, security, facility operations, and human resources, to “build a strong foundation of business acumen, adaptability, and knowledge of Port Authority operations.”
“The Port Authority, being a self-sustaining government agency, offers a unique experience that combines both the private and public sectors. Moreover, it is the world’s first transportation company to embrace the Paris Climate goals, demonstrating its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” says Kurbonshoeva. “It is truly an honor to be part of such an organization and contribute to its mission of mitigating climate change on a global scale.”
According to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, “after successful completion of the program, Leadership Fellows will be considered for key positions in areas such as facility management, finance, planning, project management, or related business functions.”
Career Goal: Climate Change Leader
During the Fellowship, Kurbonshoeva aims “to engage in a variety of projects that will provide me with a holistic view of the complex transportation industry overseen by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.”
“This fellowship program offers the opportunity to contribute to important projects at the Port Authority, enabling me to build and enhance the skills necessary for both professional and personal development. The hands-on experience is crucial for the growth of young professionals, and I am thrilled to have this opportunity.”
Last year, Kurbonshoeva attended a summer fellowship program with Coding it Forward, which brings tech-oriented people into public service industries. Now, she is looking to gain knowledge and expertise in the field of sustainability and climate change, which she calls a “vital issue” for the global community.
“While no one is immune from the impacts of climate change, it disproportionately affects disadvantaged communities and therefore exacerbates the vicious circle of social inequality,” Kurbonshoeva says. “Organizations should be mindful of their impacts on the communities where they operate and beyond.
“For my professional development, I have always strived to work at an organization that is leading a positive change in the communities where they operate and globally. The commitment of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey to the long-term sustainability of the region, diversity, and inclusion are substantial efforts in driving positive change.”
