Chan is the second Baruch student to receive the prestigious scholarship

    January 2, 2024

Baruch College alumna Joyce Chan was named a 2024 Schwarzman Scholar, a program that provides a one-year fully funded master's degree in global affairs opportunity in Beijing.

Joyce Chan is among only 150 Scholars from around the world—representing 43 countries and 114 universities--who was selected to attend a one-year, fully-funded master’s degree program in global affairs at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

Baruch College alumna Joyce Chan has been named a 2024 Schwarzman Scholar, one of the world’s most prestigious fellowship programs for graduate students. She was selected for this year’s 150-member cohort out of 4,200 applications received worldwide

The Schwarzman Scholars program provides a one-year, fully funded master’s degree in global affairs with a focus on leadership at Tsinghua University in Beijing. She is Baruch’s second Schwarzman Scholars winner.

A first-generation American, Chan recently graduated with a BBA in Marketing Management from the Zicklin School of Business. She aims to work at a Chinese technology company while studying for a master’s degree— she will be the first in her family to accomplish this milestone.

    ‘I was ecstatic!’

“I was in Toronto when I received an email to get on a call with the Director of Global Admissions, Cordel Faulk. A part of me was confident because I was told I did very well during the interview by a panelist, but a small part of me also thought, ‘what if they’re calling to reject candidates?’” Chan recalls.

“When I hopped on the call, Cordel had a huge smile and said: ‘What if I could make this a day you’ll never forget?’ I was ecstatic.”

Chan’s previous study abroad experience in Tokyo furthered her interest to get more education on a global level.

    Career Goal: Empower marginalized groups

“I have grown so much from immersing myself in a country that is completely different from what I’m used to learning about their culture, people, and technology,” Chan states. “There are many things we can learn from China in terms of technology, innovation, and policy. China is a global leader in technology and generative AI start-ups, an industry I am highly invested in.”

“My purpose is to empower marginalized groups to succeed socioeconomically through technological innovation and social entrepreneurship,” Chan says. “Schwarzman Scholars will allow me to learn from the brightest students and professors in their field, while immersing myself in China’s unique start-up ecosystem, equipping me to better address very aspect of leading a social enterprise.”
