Baruch College among the Best for Female Undergrads Earning Degrees in Computer Science and Related Disciplines

Baruch College is among the best four-year public institutions for graduating women in computer science (defined as computer and information sciences and support services), according to a just-released list by The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Among 253 entries nationwide, Baruch placed #3 on The Chronicle List titled “Which Colleges Are Best and Worst at Enrolling and Graduating Women in Computer Science and Engineering.”
“Beginning in 2016, the Paul H. Chook Department of Information Systems and Statistics made it a strategic goal to significantly increase the number of female students majoring in Computer Information Systems or taking technology-related courses,” said Marios Koufaris, PhD, chair of the Paul H. Chook Department of Information Systems and Statistics at the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College.
According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, “Computer science and engineering are two well-paying fields in which women have long been underrepresented.”
Baruch and Zicklin: A Focus on Women in Tech
Dr. Koufaris added, “Among other things, we have supported the creation of a student club, FemCode, that focuses on women in tech; we have made efforts to attract more female professors, both full-time and adjunct; and we work closely with organizations both within Baruch such as Starr and GCMC, and outside Baruch such as WiTNY and NCWIT, to provide opportunities and support for female students interested in the CIS major or the MS in Information Systems.
“We are proud to be recognized as leaders in the effort to eliminate the gender imbalance in the technology field and we will continue to work towards that goal.”
Baruch has seen its share of CIS female undergrads continuously increase over the last few years, from 21.6 percent in 2015, to 24.7 percent in 2016, and 31.1 percent in 2017. Currently, 32.2 percent of CIS majors are women.
About Baruch’s Computer Information Systems Program
The Computer Information Systems (CIS) program, available at Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business, provides a strong foundation in the technical and managerial issues related to information technology (IT). The program covers a broad range of technology-related areas, including data analytics, cybersecurity, and IT strategy. The combination of technical courses, such as Python programming, data warehousing, and web application design, with managerial courses, such as IT audit, e-business, and green IT, prepares students for a wide range of careers in a variety of industries.
Methodology
The Chronicle of Higher Education figures come from the Education Department’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. They represent only universities with more than 50 bachelor’s degree recipients in computer science throughout all of the years shown.
