Baruch College Career Services Earn Top Honors at CUNY Conference
August 1, 2022
A trio of Baruch College career services offices captured top honors at the 2022 Career Services Association of CUNY Conference. The multiple wins were in the virtual employer engagement and partnerships category and campus community engagement.
The Starr Career Development Center, which focuses on undergraduates, won first place for virtual employer engagement. In the same category, graduate career services for the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs and the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences claimed third place at the conference, a winning collaboration for co-hosting an event.
Both schools also secured second and third place, respectively, in the campus community engagement category.
Leadership and Mentoring Program for Tech Industry
Starr was recognized for sponsoring the Technology Leadership Development Program (TLDP) which is supported by the Shulman Family Charitable Fund and the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline. Launched in 2021, under the leadership of Marion Viray, TLDP provides students who wish to pursue careers in technology with opportunities in cybersecurity, data analytics, IT, and other related fields.
“Through the TLDP, students develop many career readiness skills employers are looking for such as critical thinking, problem solving, leadership, professionalism, teamwork, and oral/written communication abilities,” said Ellen Stein, PhD, director of the Starr Career Development Center at Baruch College.
“Being part of the TLDP, students have a better understanding how to look for internship opportunities, as well as obtain a strong understanding of the technology field and learn what employers are looking for in prospective candidates.”
The year-long program includes professional development workshops (resume writing, interviewing, and creating a LinkedIn profile), interpersonal skills training, employer site visits, mentorships, and hands-on group project-based internships. Students are also matched with a tech mentor who helps them have a good understanding of how technology and business intersect.
Multiple Awards for the Marxe and Weissman Schools
Third place went to the Marxe School and Weissman School for working with the CUNY Graduate Center on “CUNY Public/Private Impact Career Days.” These events connect students with employers from government divisions, non-profits, and a variety of for-profit organizations engaged in social impact work.
In the campus engagement category, Weissman and Marxe Schools also secured second and third place, respectively.
Weissman was recognized for its program “Developing Your Skills with Improv,” and the Marxe School was presented an award for its “Marxe Alumni Roundtables.”
