Baruch College—renowned for its academic excellent and vibrant campus community—hosted its annual Research & Creative Inquiry Expo 2024 to showcase the intellectual pursuits and ingenuity of its undergraduate students. Launched on May 7, this year’s expo expanded from a single day to a week-long event.

Spearheaded by the Baruch Honors Program and the College’s Bernard L. Schwartz Communications Institute, the Expo has been a decade-old tradition that brings together as many as 250 students—from a wide variety of majors from Baruch’s three schools—to present over 125 projects a year.

This year, more than 180 undergraduates participated in a total of 101 research projects. Topics, many which focused on pressing and critical issues, included: “Turning Trash into Treasure: An Analysis of Composting in New York City”; “The Relationship between Lottery Spending and Income/Poverty”; “Alpha Brainwaves and Relaxation”; “Harlem’s Gentrification: Storefront Vacancies vs Household Income”; and the “Financial Impact of NYC Migrant Crisis.”

Leading up to this annual event, faculty and administrators work collaboratively to provide students with opportunities to engage in inquiry-based undergraduate research, articulate their findings beyond the classrooms, and hone their scholarly and professional communication skills at the Expo.

This year’s winners of the annual Andreassi Award for Best Poster in Psychology:

    • Alexandra Bunde and Jennifer Lai; advised by Dr. Jennifer Mangels.
      • Poster Title: Alpha Brainwaves and Relaxation.
    • Haris Iqbal, Protoy Saha and Stephanie Medina, who is a student at John Jay College; advised by Dr. Charles Scherbaum.
      • Poster Title: The Use of Asynchronous Video Interviews (AVI) for Hiring in STEM Jobs.

    Beyond Baruch

The Research and Creative Inquiry Expo not only highlights the academic expertise of Baruch students but also serves as a springboard for other meaningful opportunities.

Students can  publish their work with CUNY Academic Works, the International Conference of Undergraduate Research, and additional opportunities listed here which broaden visibility and recognition beyond Baruch College.
