    Baruch’s MA in Mental Health Counseling Program Receives State Funding

    Baruch College ’s Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling degree program recently received $195,000 from New York State that will expand essential paid internships for students, advance training modalities, and increase scholarships for underrepresented and multilingual students to ensure that all communities are served.

    The funds are being applied in three key areas:

    • $100,000 to support paid internship and externship experiences for graduate students in mental health-related degree programs. This allocation will also support preceptor capacity building at our affiliate sites, to sponsor students through career-readiness experiences linked to degree completion requirements, and potential hiring pathways at partner sites.
    • $50,000 to introduce innovative training modalities to enhance clinical and field training experiences.
    • $45,000 to augment the existing OMH Mental Health Scholarship Program for underrepresented and/or multilingual students, providing additional scholarship funds for graduate students.

    Housed at the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, the Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling program graduates to be professional practitioners in a variety of mental health settings, including clinics, hospitals, counseling centers, outreach programs, and private practice settings.

    The program emphasizes both academic coursework and supervised clinical internship training. After 3,000 hours of supervised post-degree experience, graduates are eligible to take the New York State exam for licensure as a mental health counselor.

    Experienced, Engaged Faculty

    At the Weissman School, the program’s faculty are active clinicians and researchers who have clinical, supervisory, medical center, hospital, agency, and private practice backgrounds. Their philosophy centers on the belief that counseling professionals should have a lifelong commitment to learning to support their continued professional development and commitment to human growth.

    A Cohort Approach

    This 60-credit, full-time program operates on a cohort model whereby all students complete the same program of study. Each fall, a cohort begins the program, which is designed in lock-step sequences and spans a range of teaching methods, including class discussions, role-playing, small group work, and case study analysis.
