Baruch College Secures $400,000 in Federal Funding to Launch its Cyber Security Education Initiative

Baruch College has received $400,000 in federal funding—secured by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer—to launch its Clinic for Cyber Security and Multi‑Level Education (CCSME) initiative. This program will prepare students for high-demand careers in information technology while strengthening protections for critical public and private infrastructure.

The CCSME initiative will combine rigorous academic training with hands-on consulting experience, equipping students with the technical expertise and real-world critical thinking skills needed to prevent, detect, and address active cybersecurity challenges.

“We are deeply grateful to Senator Schumer for his leadership and support in securing this critical federal investment, which will allow Baruch College to expand access to high‑quality cybersecurity education at a moment of growing national need,” said Baruch College President S. David Wu. “Building on Baruch’s strength as one of New York’s leading generators of information technology talent, the CCSME initiative will prepare students for careers in cybersecurity, protecting the vital public and private digital infrastructure that underpins our communities.”

Strengthening the Cyber Talent Pipeline

Cyber threats are growing in both frequency and sophistication. In 2022, New York State lost more than $750 million to cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure. Meanwhile, national demand for cybersecurity professionals continues to surge. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of information security analysts is projected to grow 29 percent from 2024 to 2034—much faster than the average for all occupations.

CCSME directly addresses this workforce gap. More than 1,000 students are currently enrolled in its Computer Information Systems (CIS) major at the Zicklin School of Business, and the CCSME initiative will expand this foundation through three campus hubs and a dedicated technology lab managed by CIS faculty.

Federal grant funding will support the hiring of a center director to lead curriculum development and strategic growth, as well as faculty instruction, administrative support, and the establishment of a new cybersecurity lab.

A Community-Focused Approach to Cyber Defense

CCSME’s impact will extend beyond the classroom.

A web-based community resource page will provide accessible cybersecurity information, training materials, risk assessments, and practical guidance to help corporations and community-based organizations strengthen their defenses.

Students participating in CCSME will deliver cybersecurity support and consulting to key sectors of the economy, most notably agencies across municipal government, the healthcare sector, domestic and international nonprofits, and small businesses.

With its expected launch this fall, CCSME reinforces the College’s commitment to expanding opportunity, advancing innovation, and strengthening community partnership in New York and beyond. As digital threats continue to evolve, Baruch is equipping students—and the communities they serve—to stay ahead of the curve.
