Baruch College Welcomes More than 2,200 First-Year Students for Fall 2019 Semester
August 26, 2019
Baruch College will welcome new undergraduates to campus as part of the traditional Convocation ceremony on August 26. Approximately 2,275 first-year students will attend Baruch during the fall 2019 semester, the largest number in more than a decade.
Convocation serves as a celebratory event to mark the launch of the students’ academic careers at Baruch, and their induction into the entire campus community.
The New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) office organized Convocation 2019 in conjunction with the Division of Student Affairs. The NSFP office serves as a resource for newly enrolled undergraduates focusing on creating a smooth transition for both students and their families.
Convocation for First-Year Students: August 26
Convocation 2019 is taking place on Monday, August 26. Students will hear from Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs James McCarthy, and Art King, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students.
This year’s keynote speaker is Akhil Sharma, an Indian-American author and professor of creative writing. Sharma’s award-winning novel Family Life is required reading for all first-year students, who will discuss the book in seminar classes throughout the semester. Upper-class students teach these seminars and serve as peer leaders.
In addition to the Convocation ceremony, a variety of events will take place, including student talent shows, speed meeting, a club fest, and a reception for families.
