Baruch College Welcomes the Class of 2029

On its campus in the heart of New York City, Baruch College rolled out the welcome mat for the Class of 2029 on August 25 for nearly 4,000 new students.

The college community made sure the start of their experience as Baruch Bearcats was anything but ordinary for the more than 2,500 first-year students and 1,300 transfers. A Convocation ceremony, the official launch into life at Baruch, was followed by day-long activities including a high-energy carnival in the Clivner=Field Plaza, icebreakers to meet new friends, and meet-ups with peer mentors.

President S. David Wu said every member of the incoming class is at Baruch because of their “determination, effort, and accomplishments,” noting that they will be joining a campus community of more than 20,000 students representing different languages, different culture, , and different traditions.

In his Convocation remarks, Wu recommended that new students should engage in the following three principles for success:

    1. Connection – Try to connect with people who may look, sound, and think different than you. Just walk up, introduce yourself, and start a conversation. That’s the beginning of everything.
    2. Awareness – You came to college because you want to be a well-informed person. Don’t just grab something you found on social media and go with it. Be aware, read, and understand what is happening because the world is a complex place. Things are not always the way it seems.
    3. Respect – Everyone is entitled to their opinion and their perspective. You need to appreciate that because if you want to be respected, you must respect others.

A Diverse Class in a Dynamic City

The Class of 2029 reflects the energy, diversity, and drive that define both Baruch College and New York City. Together, the students:

    • Graduated from 645 high schools across the five boroughs and New York State.
    • Come from 18 states coast to coast—from Alaska to Florida to Oregon and Kentucky.
    • Hail from 85 countries worldwide, from India, Spain, and Taiwan, adding to Baruch’s global community.
    • Transferred from more than 450 community and four-year colleges.

    Weeks of Welcome Events

The excitement doesn’t end at Convocation. Baruch’s Weeks of Welcome helps new and returning students get connected and delve into the College’s vibrant campus life through a series of programs and events to kick off the fall semester.

Highlights range from an open house to family day to a night at Yankee Stadium with fellow Bearcats and others from the campus community.
