Baruch Graduate Student Receives Climate Justice Fellowship
August 23, 2023
Baruch College student Kevin Notice (’24) is one of 150 candidates selected for a Climate Justice Fellowship from the New York State Energy and Research Development Authority (NYSERDA), which is “on the front lines of the global energy transition and combating climate change.”
According to NYSERDA, the year-long Fellowship builds on the agency’s “related efforts to prepare the next generation of clean energy workers by funding internships and on-the-job training for individuals looking to join the clean energy industry.” Fellows receive professional development training and mentoring opportunities to advance climate justice and clean energy priorities for disadvantaged communities.
Notice, a Master of International Affairs candidate at the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, was placed at the nonprofit organization WE ACT for Environmental Justice in June and will complete the Fellowship in July 2024.
Through advocacy, planning, and research, WE ACT seeks to build healthy communities by ensuring that people of color and/or low-income residents participate meaningfully in the creation of fair environmental health and protection policies and practices.
During his Fellowship, Notice will be identifying the barriers to climate solutions in disadvantaged neighborhoods in New York City.
Advocate for People in the Green Space Industry
Notice applied for this Fellowship due to more frequent world natural disasters, and he is “devastated” they cause cultural displacement.
“I want to be on the front lines of invention and draw the map for infrastructure, tech, and global solutions,” Notice says. “I was ecstatic to be offered a fellowship because it came at a time of uncertainty for my career and deciding to advocate for people in the green space and advance climate solutions felt like a vocational calling.”
At the WE ACT for Environmental Justice, some of Notice’s responsibilities include helping advance Local Law 97 which addresses greenhouse gas emissions in New York City buildings, and assisting people transition into the green workforce. He is also working on a project to increase community engagement and diversity efforts in the environmental justice space.
“I want to be a pioneer in the field of social innovation and mobility and change the world as we see it,” Notice states. “Working in the green industry will allow me to learn more about climate change, solutions, and how to help people across the globe.”
