Baruch Graduate Wins Fulbright Binational Business Award to Mexico

Tamara Ortiz envisions a career as a trade diplomat, strengthening economic relationships between the United States and Latin America.
Baruch College alumna Tamara Ortiz (BBA, International Business ’26) has earned a Fulbright Binational Business Award to Mexico, where she will study international business at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México and spend the majority of her time at an internship with a Mexican or multinational company.
“As an Ecuadorian American, I wanted the opportunity to reconnect with my Latin roots while gaining professional experience in Mexico, one of the United States’ top trading partners,” said Ortiz who aspires for a career in international trade, commerce, or economic development.
“This experience will allow me to better understand how U.S.-Mexico business relationships function in practice because I want to become a trade diplomat.”
Baruch Helped Pave the Way
Mexico will not be Ortiz’s first international experience. Study abroad programs took her to Spain and Türkiye which deepened her interest in global cultures and reinforced the importance of listening across perspectives.
“All these experiences encouraged me to pursue a Fulbright, and this award represents an important next step in the path Baruch has helped me build.”
At Baruch, Ortiz was a Dean’s Scholar and participated in the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government and Public Affairs. Her two internships at the New York State Assembly gave insights into the relationships between public policy, community impact, and international business.
