Baruch Ranks #1 for Best Affordable Mental Health Counseling Degree

    November 4, 2021

    Share

Baruch College is the most affordable higher education institution to offer a master’s degree in mental health counseling, according to a University Headquarters ranking that evaluated 100 universities across the country.

The Masters of Arts in Mental Health Counseling program at Baruch’s Weissman School of Arts and Sciences prepares graduates to be professional practitioners in a variety of mental health settings, including clinics, hospitals, counseling centers, outreach programs, and private practice settings.

The program emphasizes both academic coursework and supervised clinical internship training. After 3,000 hours of supervised post-degree experience, graduates are eligible to take the New York State exam for licensure as a mental health counselor.

    Experienced, Engaged Faculty

At the Weissman School, the program’s faculty are active clinicians and researchers who have clinical, supervisory, medical center, hospital, agency and private practice backgrounds. Their philosophy centers on the belief that counseling professionals should have a lifelong commitment to learning to support their continued professional development and commitment to human growth.

They are humanistic in their approach, while providing students with a broad understanding of varied theoretical models.

    A Cohort Approach

This 60-credit, full-time program operates on a cohort model whereby all students complete the same program of study. Each fall, a cohort begins the program, which is designed in lock-step sequences and spans a range of teaching methods, including class discussions, role-playing, small group work, and case study analysis.

    Methodology

To gather its data, University Headquarters collected data from government sources such as the National Center for Education Statistics, College Scorecard, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Payscale. The factors used to rank each school included cost of tuition, admission rate, retention rate, four-year and six-year graduation rate, number of programs offered, online programs offered, loan default rate, diplomas awarded, and percent of students receiving financial aid.
