September 20, 2024
Baruch College earned the top spot among those institutions that are strong engines for economic mobility, according to a new data analysis by think tank Third Way.
To help students and families better understand how long it will take to realize a return on their investment in obtaining a college degree, Third Way developed a value metrics to “offer insight into how well institutions across the United States are delivering economic returns to their students.”
Its just-published Price-to-Earnings Premium and Economic Mobility Index metrics assesses whether institutions are setting students up “to recoup their educational costs quickly—or leaving them worse off than if they had never attended.”
Graduation rates, earnings after graduation, and the economic background of students are among the factors considered in its analysis of more than 1,600 higher education institutions nationwide.

Methodology
Using data from the College Scorecard, the PEP was calculated from the ratio of the institution’s total average net price to the graduate’s expected earnings premium from attending that institution. Third Way divides the total average net price of the bachelor’s degree (assuming four years of tuition) by the difference between the median earnings of a former student from that college ten years after initial enrollment and the median earnings of a high school diploma holder in the same state as the institution.
