Baruch College’s dynamic student-athlete Mia Castillo (’25) has electrified basketball courts in New York City throughout the 2024-25 season, achieving remarkable scoring records that highlight her talent, drive, and teamwork.

But it was the game on February 11th where Castillo etched her name in history. During a thrilling 79-62 victory over Medgar Evers College, Castillo scored 34 points, propelling her career total to 2,273 points.

This achievement not only secured a Bearcats win but also made Castillo the all-time leading scorer in The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC), surpassing a record set more than two decades ago. Between 1999 and 2003, City College of New York’s Lauren Cargill’s set a previous record of 2,272.

President S. David Wu praised Castillo as the epitome of a Baruch student-athlete.

“Mia’s exceptional performance on the court is equally matched by her academic excellence and extracurricular leadership activities,” President Wu remarked. “The entire Baruch community is immensely proud of her history-making achievement.”

Castillo, an accounting major at Baruch’s Zicklin School of Business, is Vice President of the National Association of Black Accountants, and interned last summer at Grant Thornton LLP in the audit division.

“I feel incredibly blessed to have spent the past four years playing alongside an amazing team with such supportive coaches,” said Castillo. “Setting this record still feels surreal, and I can’t help but be grateful for the family I’ve found in this team. Getting the opportunity to break records while playing the game I love is just the ultimate bonus.”

    An Unstoppable Bearcat

Castillo smashed several records this season. In January, she became Baruch’s all-time scoring leader among men and women, surpassing 2,000 points—a milestone that drew the attention of Fox 5 New York’s sportscast, and the New York Amsterdam News.

Earlier on November 26, Castillo broke the women’s basketball team record for points that was previously held by Hilary Williams (1987-1991) with 1,830.

Her outstanding performance in the 2024-25 season builds upon her national recognition from the previous year, where she led NCAA Division III in scoring with an average of 27.4 points per game and total steals (156).

NY1 News took notice and aired a live morning segment with reporter Roger Clark challenging Mia to a one-on-one game at Baruch’s Athletic Center.

Bearcats will have another opportunity to cheer on Castillo. The Baruch women’s basketball team will host a CUNYAC semifinal next Tuesday, February 25 at 5:30 pm. Check out the Athletics website for more information.
