The Baruch College Athletic Department and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) joined hundreds of schools, professional sports teams, and community programs across the country to celebrate of National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 3.

At a special event on campus, six Baruch women student-athletes shared inspiring and motivating personal stories to more than 60 fellow Bearcats on how sports have made positive impacts on their lives: Julia Cuttone (Softball & Cross Country), Amanda Lee (Swimming & Cross Country), Milly Ye (Basketball), Regina Kelley (Tennis), Anesa Feratovic (Volleyball), and Mircelis Paredes (Softball)

Director of Athletic and Recreation Heather MacCulloch spoke of her personal experience and praised the woman who compete for Baruch.

“I want to center my remarks around what it means to be a teammate, and how sports impacted my life and the lessons I learned having teammates and being one in dedication to my father, my teammate,” said MacCulloch. “I am so proud of our female student-athletes and what they accomplish time and time again.”

Carrie Thomas, who served as Master of Ceremonies and is assistant athletic director for Academics, Compliance and Eligibility/SWA/SAAC Advisor, remarked on the lifelong benefits of playing sports, such as building leadership skills, self-confidence, and enduring friendships.

“This celebration inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. The confidence, strength and character gained through sports participation are the very tools girls and women need to become strong leaders in sports and life. This day is all about our female student athletes and the impact that sports has had on them whether they started as a youngster, maybe middle school or even became a college athlete while in college.

Thomas continued, “It doesn’t matter when they started playing the sport they love it’s about how the sport has molded them, given them direction, time management, commitment, drive, energy and passion. It’s about the experiences they have had. The blood and sweat they have endured. The championships they have won. And the friendships of teammates and coaches that will hopefully last a lifetime.”

National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Organized by the Women’s Sports Foundation, the National Girls and Women in Sports Day is held during the first week of February to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, recognize the influence of sports participation for women and girls, and honor the progress and continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, the preeminent legislation that paved the way for girls and women’s participation in sport.

This was the fourth straight year Baruch Athletics and SAAC hosted the national event on campus.
