The City University of New York Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez joined more than 200 Baruch students on November 21 to pack 400 care packages filled with essentials—from socks to toothbrushes—for New Yorkers in need and living in a shelter. The student-run event ushered in a “season of giving” at Baruch College that continues with the annual CUNY #GivingTuesday campaign, which runs until December 3.

For Chancellor Matos Rodríquez, the students’ vibrant spirit of volunteerism was evident at the event and exemplifies CUNY’s long-standing commitment to the City: “It’s one of the many great things that we do in The City University of New York,” said the Chancellor. “There are events like this all across our campuses. It’s a great way for our students to show civic engagement, to show that they care, to show solidarity with the communities.”

Baruch’s Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs James McCarthy welcomed Chancellor Matos Rodríguez to the campus and joined him and the students on the assembly line to fill the bags. Personal notes were penned by students and added to the care packages to express support and encouragement.

The volunteer event, which was open to all students, was organized by a student organization, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, and co-sponsored by other student organizations, including Baruch’s Undergraduate Student Government, National Association of Black Accountants, the Caribbean Student Association, the Japanese Anime Club, and Hillel.

To top off the event, all volunteers were invited to share a Thanksgiving- themed meal together in the Multi-Purpose Room. Care packages were picked up to be distributed by the Salvation Army’s Homeless Shelter in Brooklyn.
