CNBC Says Baruch College is #2 Best Public Institution for Return on Investment
Jumping eight spots from last yearAugust 3, 2020
Baruch College is the second best public higher education institution in the country for providing a return on investment, according to the CNBC ranking “The Top 50 U.S. Colleges That Pay Off the Most in 2020.” This ranking—which spotlights schools that “provide students the highest average salaries for their tuition dollars”— marks the second straight year CNBC is recognizing Baruch for its value, jumping eight spots from #10 in 2019 when the media outlet first published the ranking.
Baruch College President S. David Wu, PhD, points to CNBC’s and other top rankings that reinforce Baruch’s reputation as a leading educational institution in the country.
“The recent CNBC ranking is the latest addition to Baruch’s steady rising of national rankings and accolades, reaffirming what is now a distinctive niche—a rare amalgam of academic achievement and upward mobility for diverse students from all echelons of society. While the ranking clearly shows how Baruch graduates compete favorably with those from the most prestigious institutions across the U.S., private and public,” said President Wu. “What it does not show is the fact that a majority of Baruch students are from historically underserved population in higher education. As such, Baruch not only serves the private good—one that advances our students’ personal and professional success—but the public good by expanding the base of higher education to deliver the most rigorous academic programs at an affordable price to people from all backgrounds and social classes, especially those in our underserved communities.”
Baruch is the only public college in New York State to make CNBC’s list, and placed ahead of such top national public schools as University of Michigan, University of California, and University of Virginia. The list also includes such private institutions as Stanford, Harvard, and Princeton.
In the past six months alone, Baruch College earned high rankings for both academic excellence and affordability:
- #1: Brookings Institution ranks Baruch College as top four-year public college nationwide for successfully promoting upward economic and social mobility among its lower-income students
- #1: Money’s “Top 10 Best Colleges for Business Majors”
- Baruch College ranks #12 nationwide for return-on-investment among public institutions

Methodology
This ranking is based on CNBC’s analysis of data provided by The Hechinger Report’s Tuition Tracker and PayScale’s College Salary Report. For this ranking, CNBC divided the average net cost of a school for the average American student by the average earnings of graduates 10 years after entering the workforce. A detailed explanation of the methodology is available here.
