The American Academy of Arts and Letters has elected Baruch College’s Distinguished Professor of English Grace Schulman, PhD, to become a member of its Department of Literature.

According to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the honor of election is “considered the highest form of recognition of artistic merit in this country.”

The prominent honor society—founded in 1898 and comprised of the nation’s leading architects, artists, composers, and writers—will hold its ceremony on May 22 in New York City to induct the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences professor.

“Professor Schulman’s induction into the American Academy of Arts and Letters is the climax of a long and distinguished career as poet, writer, editor, and, of course, teacher,” said Aldemaro Romero Jr., PhD, Dean of the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences. “It is as proud a moment for the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences as it is for her, and it brings the highest level of national recognition that she so richly deserves for her extraordinary accomplishments.”

Upon learning that she will become a member of the Academy, Dr. Schulman said, “It’s glorious to be elected by people I so admire.”

Schulman added that she is “grateful to Baruch College for its support, encouragement, and especially for their gifts of writing time, through the years.”

From Bards to Builders: Only 250 Academy Members

The Academy’s membership is limited to 250 individuals, and members are elected for life. Only when vacancies occur will the Academy elect new members.

Shulman will join an impressive list of current members who have been internationally and nationally lauded for their outstanding artistic contributions. This exclusive membership includes artist Christo, composer Philip Glass, writer Toni Morrison, and architect I.M. Pei, among others.

    Grace Schulman: Award-Winning Poet

Grace Schulman is an acclaimed poet and the author of seven collections of poems. Her new memoir, Strange Paradise: Portrait of a Marriage (Turtle Point Press, 2018), reflects on her marriage to virologist Jerome Schulman, along with her mentors and influencers both early and later in life.

Schulman has received several awards for her artistic work. Notable honors include the Frost Medal for Distinguished Lifetime Achievement in American Poetry, the Aiken Taylor Award for poetry, the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, New York University’s Distinguished Alumni Award, and a Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Additionally, Schulman has won five Pushcart Prizes, and her work has appeared in numerous publications, including the Nation, the New Yorker and Poetry Daily.
