David Birdsell, PhD, dean of the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, has been named on City & State’s inaugural Higher Education Power 50 list, which honors the 50 most powerful New Yorkers working in higher education.

Ranked #39 on the list, Dean Birdsell was recognized as “an expert on the intersection of media, politics and policy,” who “weighs in frequently on issues ranging from the special election for New York City Public Advocate to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s rumored 2020 presidential bid.”

City & State also pointed out that Birdsell “has been instrumental in the development of The Marxe School, helping its master of public administration program earn the No. 1 spot among New York City [public] institutions ranked by U.S. News & World Report.”

”I am humbled by this honor, which I see reflective not of any particular distinction on my part, but the terrific work that everyone associated with the Marxe School has done to cement its influence in New York and beyond,” said Birdsell.

The Marxe Dean has centered his academic work on the nexus of communication, media, and information technology in politics, government, and nonprofit administration. An expert on political debating and widely published on communication theory and practice, he is a frequent guest commentator on debates and other aspects of political communication for national and international media.

City & State is a multimedia organization that covers New York’s local and state politics and policy.
