Marxe School Student Named a New York City Urban Fellow
April 28, 2019

Hermanoschy Bernard is one of 25 students selected to complete a nine-month paid fellowship that introduces them to local government and public service.
Hermanoschy Bernard (’19), a student of the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, was selected as one of 25 New York City Urban Fellows for 2019-2020. Bernard, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs, will be working with current decision makers and assisting in the implementation of public policy.
Considered the premier training program in government, Urban Fellows is a highly selective, nine-month paid fellowship, which combines work in Mayoral offices and City agencies with volunteer service opportunities. Sponsored by the City of New York, the fellowship is “designed to introduce America’s finest college students and graduates to local government and public service.”
For Bernard, this experience aligns with his passion for public service.
“Serving my community has always been important to me,” he said. “Being an Urban Fellow will allow me to do that and learn from current leaders, who are making a difference each day.”
With an eye towards obtaining a master’s degree in public policy in the future, Bernard recognized this program would have more immediate benefits to help advance his career.
“The application process was challenging, but it forced me to figure out the issues I’m passionate about,” explained Bernard “The tremendous development opportunities will prepare me for a career in a New York City government agency and be crucial to my future endeavors.”
