Suit Up For Success Helps Approximately 250 Baruch Students Buy Professional Clothing
April 16, 2019

The annual Suit Up For Success event enables students to purchase both new and gently used business attire at discounted rates.
Close to 250 undergraduate students from Baruch College walked away with elegant but heavily discounted business attire at the Starr Career Development Center’s annual Suit Up For Success event.
Suit Up For Success enables undergraduate students to upgrade their professional wardrobes by purchasing both new and gently used business attire at discounted rates. On sale were ties for $3, handbags for $5, entire suits for $10, blazers for $5, among other professional clothing and accessories.
Baruch alum, Reuel Matthew (’10, MS ’11), founder of Egami Collections – a bespoke suit design and tailoring company – facilitated on the spot and free-of-cost measurements, ensuring the perfect fit for a lasting impression. This year, Suit Up For Success raised double the amount of money raised last year, and will direct these funds to further support Starr’s corporate clothing closet which is available for students to borrow from for various professional events throughout the year.
“At Starr, we’re dedicated to preparing students for life at Baruch, and beyond, by helping them develop their professional skills, interview skills and choosing the right career path. Looking presentable at interviews and networking events is an important but somewhat neglected aspect of this process,” said Ellen Stein, PhD, director of the Starr Career Development Center. “The annual Suit Up For Success event is aimed at helping our students succeed at professional meetings by enhancing their overall look to further support their academic accomplishments in professional settings.”
Making a Lasting Impression on Employers
One of the most important aspects of any job interview is appearance, specifically your clothing. Cesar, a senior majoring in finance, expressed that “job fairs and networking events are always stressful because we [students] need to make a lasting impression on employers, and it’s important to look our best.”
Cesar added, “I have borrowed formal clothing from Starr’s closet previously, but with Suit Up for Success, I was able to buy my first suit! The staff at Starr has been great throughout my undergraduate career, I have an interview coming up, and can’t wait to wear my new suit!”
Faria, a sophomore planning a career in fashion marketing said, “I found the perfect blazer for my next career fair! It looks great on me, is affordable, and convenient since I just needed to walk down from class to buy it. I want to say thank you to the staff at Starr and the people who donated all of these clothes for us to choose from!”
Helping Prepare Students for Professional World
The Starr Career Development Center works with undergraduate students from all years at Baruch College with numerous career related services including job and internship searches, career counseling, resume building and review, along with interview preparation. Suit Up For Success is an extension of the preparation process, by helping aspiring students take the first of their many steps into the professional world by providing a platform that helps them to dress the part.
Dr. Stein and the team at Starr would like to extend heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to all the donors and co-sponsors, including Alumni Relations, Development Office, Division of Student Affairs, SEEK, Honors Program, Undergraduate Student Government, Peers for Careers, Baruch Men’s and Women’s tennis teams, staff, faculty and alumni for helping make Suit Up a great success.
