The Ticker Celebrates 90th Anniversary
Alumni of Baruch’s student newspaper include Pulitzer Prize-finalists, major media journalists, and successful entrepreneursJuly 28, 2022
The Baruch College community congratulates The Ticker as the independent, student-run newspaper celebrates its 90th year in continuous production.
Amanda Salazar (’22), who served as Editor-in-Chief for the 2021-2022 academic year and is now pursuing a Master of Arts degree at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, said, “Throughout the years, The Ticker has remained committed to bringing students, faculty, and staff accurate and fairly reported news relating to the CUNY system and Baruch itself. This mission is what drives our staff to this day as we continue to be a leader in CUNY news.”
According to Salazar, since 1932, students have turned to The Ticker for campus news, college sports coverage, and opinion pieces, as well as reporting on national stories and cultural trends.
Baruch Alumni Find Success, Citing The Ticker
To commemorate its 90th anniversary, the newspaper has run profiles of former Ticker members from throughout the decades who have gone on to become reporters, editors, publishers, communications directors and more. Many cite The Ticker as an overwhelmingly positive part of their experience as students at Baruch.
For example, Steven Scheer (’92) is a Ticker alumnus and an economics correspondent for Reuters based in Jerusalem. As he put it, his experiences at The Ticker “made me the journalist I am.”
Another alumna, Lia Eustachewich (’09), is the current managing editor of news for The New York Post. While at The Ticker, she was a sports reporter, opinions editor, and eventually became the news editor. She credits her time at Baruch for providing unexpected opportunities that ultimately had a large impact on her life and career journey. “The Ticker really helped me learn on the fly and to be adaptable,” she said.
Marvin Kitman, who wrote for The Ticker while taking classes at Baruch, went on to become a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1982. Victor Chu (’07) leveraged the skills he gained as a Ticker photographer to launch his own drone photography businesses. Others, like Victoria Merlino (’19), work in communications as consultants and spokespeople in the public and private sectors.
What’s Next?
Emanuela Gallo, who is The Ticker‘s current Editor-in-Chief and a senior, is excited about the future of the publication. She shared: “As The Ticker prepares for the fall semester, we re-commit to serving Baruch and CUNY students by covering topics and issues they care about. We will report on Baruch’s continued transition toward in-person classes, club events and services. We will also continue to recruit more students to our staff.”
She also discussed plans to commemorate the anniversary, and touched on plans to bring back the pub’s print version. She said, “Our goal is to resume printing our newspaper, which will help increase readership. Throughout the year, we also hope to connect with Ticker alumni who contributed to the legacy we celebrate during our 90th anniversary.”
