This fall, four Baruch College undergraduates from the Zicklin School of Business are studying abroad in South Korea, Germany, Hong Kong, and Spain after being selected as Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholars.
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sponsors the Gilman International Scholarship program, which today has more than 31,000 alumni from 1,335 U.S. institutions. According to the program, the grant enables “students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad to gain skills crucial to our national security and economic competitiveness.
“Dream come true embarking on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
For the Zicklin students, the Gilman Scholarships will not only provide career-building skills and opportunities but will also deliver life-changing experiences.
Nesrine Ben Hamouda (’20), B.B.A. international business and minoring in finance and political science, is studying abroad in Germany.
Ben Hamouda has wanted to study abroad for a long time and is “very grateful” for this opportunity. She believes this “fully-engaged experience” in Germany will have a huge impact on her life and future as she seeks to become a successful businesswoman and humanitarian.
“Having this opportunity and privilege to experience an academic exchange program that fits my goals perfectly is beyond amazing,” Ben Hamouda said. “I am accomplishing self-development and enriching myself with the knowledge offered in this new country with its many different cultures and habits.”
Ben Hamouda added, “This experience is helping me build the adaptability skills necessary to thrive in any foreign environment I may encounter throughout my life and professional career. This international experience is also having an impact on my understanding of international business on a one on one basis, and it will be a great help to gain a foundation and a strong base for my career in international business and politics.”
Sophia Chow (’20), B.B.A. human resources management, is applying the Gilman Scholarship to study in Hong Kong.
Chow was “overjoyed” hearing that she earned a Gilman International Scholarship and called it a “dream come true embarking on this once in a lifetime opportunity.”
“As an exchange student studying in Hong Kong, I am getting out of my comfort zone and becoming more adaptive in different situations,” Chow said. “I also am broadening my perspective of the world, making friends from different backgrounds, and creating wonderful memories.”
Chow continued, “Since the world is becoming more globalized and interconnected, it is necessary for someone in human resources like me to work with individuals from different backgrounds and be culturally aware.”
Fatoumata Diallo (’20), B.B.A. digital marketing, is attending the Yonsei University Exchange Program in South Korea.
While studying abroad in Seoul, Diallo wants to become familiar with the Korean market, Korean consumer behavior, and how U.S. companies can position themselves in South Korea. Diallo is excited merging herself in another culture and developing valuable life skills such as independence and adaptability, which she says are “necessary for both personal and professional growth.”
“By studying abroad, I am learning about new perspectives and developing cross-cultural awareness,” Diallo added. “I wish to become proficient in speaking, writing and reading the Korean language, as I am interested in a career with a global technology company as a product marketing manager.”
Jazmine Webb (’20), B.B.A. human resources management, is studying abroad this fall in Spain.
Webb said she was “ecstatic” receiving a Gilman International Scholarship and is excited being able to “immerse herself in the Spanish culture and improve her Spanish speaking skills.”
“My future career goals include becoming a human resources professional and this award will help me achieve that goal by giving me exposure to people with different cultures and mindsets to me and allowing me to learn how to effectively communicate with them.”
