Zicklin School of Business Students Win Freeman-ASIA Awards to Study in Japan
August 8, 2019
Two students from the Zicklin School of Business are recipients of a Freeman-ASIA award and both will soon be studying abroad at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.
Danqing Hua (’20) and Sally Xie (’21) will respectively travel to Japan in fall 2019 and spring 2020.
The Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) supports U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia, its people and cultures.
Danqing Hua: Focus on the Japanese Business World
Hua, an international business major with a minor in finance, wants to acquire more insight into Japan’s business world, as well as grasp the country’s traditions.
“I will be able to learn from professors who have more knowledge on Japan’s economy,” Hua said, “and be able to see what they think is important in business and what is different from the United States.”
She added, “I believe going into a country where the traditions and customs of the people living there are so different from America will help me develop my social and communication skills. It will be beneficial for my future career in international business.”
Sally Xie: A Career-Building Experience
Xie was “absolutely ecstatic” when hearing the news she won the award and “reread the email multiple times that day before telling her family and friends.”
She believes living in Japan during the spring 2020 semester will benefit her career. The accounting major wants to work in a management position for a major firm.
“As an accountant in a large corporation, I would have the opportunity to meet and interact with a variety of people from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures,” Xie said. “Going to Japan will help me build my interpersonal skills and allow me to experience a different culture firsthand.”
